Computer Workstations Available to the Public
General Information
-
There are twenty (as of Dec. 13th) public workstations with Internet access. All contain a standard Internet browser, and word processing software (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher, etc.) All computers now have the same operating system, Windows XP, but some capabilities such as burning CD-R's, downloading images from digital cameras, accessing Chat, Instant Messaging sites, or gaming may not be available. These machines were given to E.G. Fisher Public Library by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. You may save to flash drives, or floppy disks only. Printing from these workstations is permitted and the printed pages can be picked up at the Reference Desk. Cost for printing is 20 cents per sheet. Sign-in for these computers is required.
-
Software such as WordPerfect, or Microsoft Works are not available on Library workstations.
-
Two workstations with no Internet access are available for those wishing to use word processing or other software. Sign-in for these computers is required. You may save to floppy disks, CD-ROM's, and flash drives. Printing from these workstations is permitted and the printed pages can be picked up at the Reference Desk. Cost for printing is 20 cents per sheet.
-
Four workstations with no Internet access are available for children. Two workstations are located within the Children's Reading area, and two are located across from the Reference Desk. These computers contain reading games for children under the age of 12. Sign-in for these computers is required. Headphones must be checked out at the reference desk and then returned in good condition when a child has finished his/her computer game session.
-
One workstation is available for those who already have a web-based email account to check their email. No sign-in is required. There is a time limit of 15 minutes per patron.
-
One Ethernet port is available for those wishing to connect their personal laptop computer to the Internet. A connection cord can be borrowed from the Library if you do not already have one. Printing from this port is not available. Sign-in for this port is required at the Reference Desk.
-
If all workstations are occupied, you may ask to have your name added to the "Waiting List" to await your place for the next available computer. Your first name will be called out and you must come to the Reference Desk to sign-in. Please do not invade other patrons' privacy as they work on computers, or create a disturbance when awaiting your turn. Stay alert to listen for your name when it is called and come to the desk promptly to sign-in.
-
A reminder: if you have signed in to use a computer, please let library staff know when you have finished your session. Other patrons could be waiting. Please help our staff reduce waiting time to a minimum. Thank you!
